Dive the Wreck of the Spiegel Grove with Key Dives

The Spiegel Grove (LSD-32) stands as a monument to maritime history and a premier destination for serious scuba divers. Measuring 510 feet in length, this retired Navy vessel is one of the largest ships ever intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef. Located approximately 6 miles offshore from Islamorada, it offers an expansive underwater landscape that serves as a vital habitat for diverse marine life and a top-tier site for wreck enthusiasts.

The History of a Florida Keys Icon

The Spiegel Grove has a storied past, even in its transition to an artificial reef. In May 2002, during its scheduled scuttling, the ship unexpectedly rolled onto its starboard side and sank six hours ahead of schedule. It remained on its side for three years until Hurricane Dennis moved through the area in 2005. The force of the storm shifted the massive vessel into its current upright position, making it a more accessible and visually impressive site for the diving community.

Technical Dive Profile

Because of its depth and potential for strong currents, the Spiegel Grove is a site reserved for experienced divers.

  • Top Masts & Wheelhouse: Approximately 65 feet.
  • Main Deck: Approximately 80 feet.
  • Maximum Depth: 134 feet to the sandy bottom.

At Key Dives, we require all guests visiting the Spiegel Grove to hold an Advanced Open Water certification. For those looking to upgrade their skills to meet these requirements, we offer frequent Advanced Open Water courses that focus on deep diving, navigation, and wreck safety.

Explore the Spiegel Grove on the Diversion

Experience this massive superstructure from our specialized vessel, the Diversion. This 32-foot Newton is limited to just 6 divers, ensuring a semi-private, high-end experience without the crowds. In addition to the Spiegel Grove, our team regularly visits other legendary wrecks and reefs, including:

  • The Duane: A 327-foot U.S. Coast Guard cutter often ranked among the top 10 wreck dives in the country.
  • The Bibb: The Duane’s sister ship, offering another deep-water challenge for advanced divers.
  • Islamorada Reefs: We often follow our wreck dives with a visit to the vibrant, shallow reefs of northern Islamorada to round out the day.

Start Your Advanced Training

If you are currently an Open Water diver, you can expand your capabilities with our team. We offer Advanced Open Water training for as little as $100 when added to a multi-dive package. This training covers essential specialties such as fish identification, deep diving, and wreck exploration.
