What is the Divemaster Certification?

If you have a deep love of the ocean, scuba diving, and working with people, becoming a Divemaster is the next step and the first level of becoming a dive professional. Work with and learn from Key Dives staff to expand your diving knowledge, hone your scuba skills, and increase your confidence in the water. After completing this course, you will be certified to lead guided dives and assist with scuba courses.

Course Breakdown

1. Theory and Knowledge Development

Learn the fundamentals of professional diving through self-study and classroom sessions at our Islamorada dive shop. Topics include diving physics, decompression theory, dive equipment and maintenance, diver safety, risk management, aquatic ecosystems, and more.

2. In Water Skills Training

Improve your in-water skills through a series of swim tests and rescue scenarios. You’ll practice:

• Rescue skills and emergency management
• Navigation exercises
• Deep diving techniques
• Equipment exchange and problem-solving underwater

3. Practical Applications

Assist instructors during scuba diving courses and guided dives to gain hands-on experience. This phase includes:

• Supervising diving activities and guiding certified divers

Minimum Requirements

• Age: 18+ (or 15 for junior certification)
• Prerequisite Certifications: Rescue Diver from any agency AND CPR/First Aid training completed within the last 24 months
• Logged Dives:
• At least 40 logged dives to start the program
• 60 logged dives to earn final certification
• Health: Complete a Medical Questionnaire before diving and you MUST obtain a physician’s approval.
