Lighthouse to Ledge: Exploring Islamorada’s Premier Dive Sites
When people look for the best places to dive in the Florida Keys, they often think they have to travel to the furthest reaches of the archipelago. However, those of us who live and breathe these waters know a secret: Islamorada holds the crown for reef diversity, health, and "fishiness."
At Key Dives, we are a full-service, first-class dive facility dedicated to showing you the vibrant heart of the best Florida Keys dive sites. Whether you are looking to learn to scuba dive on vacation or you’re a seasoned pro hunting for the elusive spotted eagle ray, our backyard is home to over 60 incredible sites that redefine what it means to go Florida scuba diving.
Shallow Reefs & Hidden Shrines
You don't always need to go deep to see the "big stuff." Some of our favorite diving spots in Florida are shallow patch reefs teeming with life and local lore.
- Alligator Reef (25’): Located in Islamorada, FL, this is a legendary site. With more than 600 identified fish species, it’s a bustling metropolis of moray eels, nurse sharks, and turtles. It is also a key site for our coral restoration work with I.CARE.
- Davis Reef (15-20’): Home to a famous underwater Buddha shrine (don’t forget to rub his belly for luck!), this site is perfect for long, relaxed bottom times and incredible night dives.
- Morada (20-25’): Living up to its name ("Purple" in Spanish), this reef is a violet-hued dream of sea plumes and fans, often visited by Bonnethead sharks.
- Rocky Top (25’): A staff favorite! We helped rescue a green sea turtle named Rocky here. It boasts some of the healthiest corals in the sanctuary.
Deep Ledges & The Iconic Eagle Wreck
For those seeking a bit more depth and drama, our Florida Keys scuba diving packages often include trips to the outer reef and historic wrecks.
- The Eagle Wreck (70-115’): This 287-foot freighter is one of the great places to dive for wreck enthusiasts. Look for massive goliath groupers, bull sharks, and thousands of schooling jacks circling the silhouette of the ship.
- Crocker Reef & Inner Crocker Reef (30-90’): This expansive tract features dramatic valleys and spur-and-groove formations. It’s a highway for sea turtles and stingrays.
- Victory (40-90’): A spectacular V-shaped reef where the coral meets the sand in a sloping ledge, offering a front-row seat to passing sharks and schools of jacks.
Start Your Underwater Journey
If you've never breathed underwater, there is no better place to start. As one of the premier dive shops in the Florida Keys, we make it easy to go from "curious" to "certified."
Florida Scuba Diving Certification: Our instructors provide a patient, first-class experience for those ready to earn their fins.
I.CARE Partnership: Dive with a purpose! Many of our sites, including Capt. Arnos and the Maze, are part of active coral outplanting projects. You can literally watch the reef grow.
Dive the Keys with the Experts
The ocean is calling, and Islamorada is the answer. From the tiny sailfin blennies at the Maze to the towering structures of Islamorada Fingers, every descent is a new story. Join us at Key Dives and see why these reefs are the true jewels of the Florida Keys.
