Picture yourself dropping down to 100+ feet where one of the Florida Keys' most famous shipwrecks sits on its side on the sandy bottom like a massive underwater monument. The Eagle wreck dive off Islamorada isn't your typical reef dive — this is serious deep-water diving that rewards advanced divers with several levels to explore and world-class marine encounters you won't find anywhere else in the Keys. Every Friday morning at 7:45 AM, we head out to this legendary 287-foot freighter that's become a top artificial reef dive in South Florida.
The Eagle sits proud in about 110 feet of water, making this a proper advanced dive that demands respect for depth and bottom time. You'll have roughly 15-20 minutes of bottom time depending on your air consumption and nitrogen loading; but trust me — that's plenty of time to explore the crow's nest and bridgedeck while watching out for the resident marine life that calls this wreck home. The visibility here typically runs 60-80 feet on good days, giving you those postcard-perfect shots of the entire wreck structure draped in soft corals and sponges. This isn't a dive where you're hunting around coral heads looking for fish — the Eagle delivers big pelagic action with schools of jacks, barracuda formations, and the occasional reef shark making lazy passes along the hull.
We run a tight 1:6 divemaster ratio on Eagle dives because safety comes first at these depths. We thoroughly brief the layout of the wreck before you head down so you know which landmarks to keep an eye out for and where the best photo ops are located. The descent takes you straight down the mooring line to avoid any current and as you drop, you will get a chance to take in the stunning wreck from above. Advanced Open Water certification and recent diving experience is required here, but honestly, if you're not comfortable with deeper profiles and managing your air at depth, this isn't the dive for you. The Eagle demands proper buoyancy control since stirring up the sand at 100+ feet ruins visibility for everyone as well as being able to hold a safety stop with quite a few other people on the anchor line. We provide fresh fruit onboard and drinking water but bring your own refillable bottle — part of our commitment to keeping these reefs pristine.
Goliath grouper are the true stars of the Eagle wreck, with these massive giants often reaching 6-8 feet in length and weighing several hundred pounds. They're most active during summer months from June through September, hanging out in the wreck's darker recesses during the day before emerging to feed. What makes encountering a goliath grouper so special is their curious nature — they'll often approach divers closely, creating those jaw-dropping photo moments that make your dive log legendary. These gentle giants were nearly wiped out by overfishing but have made a remarkable comeback around protected wrecks like the Eagle.
Great barracuda patrol the Eagle's superstructure in impressive formations, especially during winter months when baitfish concentrate around the wreck. These sleek predators can reach 5-6 feet long and their silver bodies create mesmerizing walls of fish that part as you swim through. Barracuda are most active during early morning dives, which perfectly matches our Friday 7:45 AM departure time. They're naturally curious about divers but maintain a respectful distance, often cruising by just overhead.
If you're extra lucky, bull sharks have been known to make appearances at the Eagle, particularly during summer months when water temperatures peak. These 7-10 foot sharks cruise the wreck's perimeter hunting for easy meals stirred up by fishing and diver activity. Sharks are harmless to (and usually afraid of) divers and actually indicate a healthy marine ecosystem — their presence means the artificial reef is thriving. The best shark encounters happen when you position yourself along the wreck's edge and remain stationary, allowing these beautiful predators to investigate you on their terms.
The Eagle wreck represents the pinnacle of Florida Keys diving — a legitimate advanced dive that challenges your skills while rewarding you with marine encounters that rival any Caribbean destination. With our expert guides, top-rated safety protocols, and commitment to small group ratios, you're getting a world-class wreck diving experience that's become a customer favorite among serious divers. Plus, $2 from every trip goes directly toward coral restoration, so you're contributing to the future of these reefs. Remember our 24-hour cancellation policy (72 hours during holidays) and we'll provide full refunds if weather forces us to cancel. The Eagle is waiting — time to add this legendary wreck to your logbook.
