Looking to make a real difference while exploring some of the best reefs in the Florida Keys? The Trash Derby isn't your typical dive trip – it's a hands-on conservation experience that combines world-class diving with meaningful marine cleanup. You'll spend your bottom time removing debris from pristine coral formations while enjoying the crystal-clear waters that make the Keys a diver's paradise. With professional guides leading the way at an exclusive 1:6 ratio, you get personalized attention while contributing to reef restoration efforts that keep these waters healthy for future generations.
Your morning starts at the Key Dives dock, where you'll meet your certified dive master – part of the team that earned "Best Dive Masters in the Keys" recognition for 2026. The boat ride to our reef sites takes just 25 minutes, giving you time to gear up and get briefed without rushing. Once you descend, you'll see firsthand why the Florida Reef Tract needs our help. Between removing fishing line tangled around coral heads and collecting plastic bottles wedged in crevices, you'll witness the incredible biodiversity these reefs support. The work feels rewarding when you see how quickly small actions make a big impact. Every piece of trash you remove gives coral polyps room to grow and fish a safer place to feed and breed.
We handle all the heavy lifting with full valet gear service – tanks, weights, and everything else you need comes standard. Your dive master will walk you through proper debris collection techniques during the surface briefing, covering how to safely remove trash without damaging delicate coral structures. Most cleanup work happens in 15-30 feet of water, making it accessible for intermediate divers while still offering plenty to see. You'll use mesh collection bags to gather debris, and our guides know exactly where problem areas need attention. After your dives, hot freshwater showers on the boat help you rinse off, and fresh fruit keeps your energy up. Don't forget to bring a refillable water bottle – we provide ice-cold drinking water, but single-use plastics defeat the purpose of what we're doing down there.

While you're focused on cleanup work, the Florida Keys reef system puts on quite a show. Parrotfish are everywhere, and you'll hear their constant crunching as they scrape algae off coral heads – each fish produces up to 200 pounds of sand per year through their feeding process. They're most active in the morning hours when we're diving, making them easy to spot in their vibrant blues and greens. Yellow tangs dart between brain coral formations, and their bright coloration makes them natural photography subjects while you take breaks from debris collection. Nassau grouper tend to hang around larger coral heads and cleaning stations, often staying perfectly still until you're just a few feet away. These fish can live over 15 years and grow to 20+ pounds, but they're curious about divers and will often follow you around the reef. Nurse sharks rest in sandy patches between coral formations during daylight hours, and spotting one always adds excitement to the dive. They're completely harmless to humans and actually play a crucial role in keeping the reef ecosystem balanced by controlling smaller fish populations.
The Trash Derby combines everything that makes Keys diving special – healthy reefs, abundant marine life, and professional guides who know these waters inside and out. Plus, Key Dives donates 2% of all dive revenue toward coral reef restoration, so your trip fee directly supports long-term conservation efforts throughout the Florida Reef Tract. With our 24-hour cancellation policy (72 hours during holidays), you can book with confidence knowing you'll get a full refund if weather doesn't cooperate. Ready to make your next dive count for something bigger? The reefs need your help, and you'll love every minute you spend exploring them.
