Get ready to explore some of the most famous shipwrecks in the Florida Keys on Key Dives' annual Wreck Trek. This isn't your typical two-tank morning dive – we're talking about a full-day wreck diving marathon that takes you to three distinct artificial reefs between 80-120 feet. You'll check in bright and early at 7:45 AM and won't see the dock again until around 3:00 PM, giving you plenty of bottom time to really get to know these underwater giants. The Spiegel Grove, Duane, Bibb, and Eagle are all on the menu, depending on conditions. Each wreck has its own personality and marine life community, so you're getting three completely different dive experiences in one epic day.
This deep wreck adventure requires some serious diving chops – you'll need Advanced Open Water certification or a Deep specialty to join us. We're hitting depths between 80-120 feet on all three dives, and currents can definitely pick up around these wrecks. The Spiegel Grove sits as one of the largest artificial reefs in the world, while the Coast Guard cutters Duane and Bibb offer swim-throughs and plenty of nooks to explore. The Eagle, a 287-foot freighter, lies perfectly upright and makes for some stellar photography opportunities. All three tanks are filled with nitrox to maximize your bottom time at depth – you don't need nitrox certification, but we highly recommend getting it if you plan to do more technical diving. The extra $36 for nitrox is absolutely worth it when you're spending this much time at depth.
We roll with nitrox on all three tanks to give you the longest possible bottom times on these deep wrecks. The boat provides fresh water rinse stations and hot showers, plus ice and drinking water – just bring your own refillable bottle. Dive gloves are a must-have for gripping the mooring lines in current, and you'll want to pack lunch since we're out for the full day. The wrecks can have some surge and current, so be ready to use your fins and stay close to your buddy. These aren't penetration dives unless you're properly trained, but there's plenty to see swimming around the outside structures. The marine life tends to be most active in the morning, so our first dive usually offers the best fish action. Each wreck sits in slightly different terrain, so you'll get variety in both the artificial structure and the surrounding reef ecosystem.
"Whole staff at Key Dives absolutely incredible as always...Special shoutout to Erica who was my dive master that day!!" - John
The wreck ecosystem in Key Largo is absolutely loaded with marine life, especially around these older artificial reefs that have had decades to develop their communities. Goliath grouper are the real show-stoppers here – these massive fish can reach over 400 pounds and love to hang around the wreck structures. They're most active during summer months and completely fearless around divers, often swimming right up to check you out. The size of these fish never gets old, even for experienced divers. You'll also encounter large schools of yellowtail snapper and blue tangs that swirl around the wreck superstructure like living clouds.
Nurse sharks are year-round residents that like to rest under the wreck overhangs during daylight hours. They're completely harmless and usually pretty tolerant of divers, but give them space if they're resting. Green moray eels make their homes in the wreck's crevices and swim-throughs – these guys can get huge in the deep water and are always a highlight when you spot one peering out from the wreckage. The cleaning stations around these wrecks also attract Caribbean reef sharks, especially during the cooler months when they're more active in the shallower waters.
The Wreck Trek only happens once a year, making it one of the most sought-after dive trips in Key Largo. At $200 for the full day ($170 for Monroe County residents), you're getting three premium wreck dives with nitrox for less than most operators charge for two-tank trips. The 48-hour cancellation policy is firm, so make sure your schedule is locked in before booking. Weather can definitely impact which wrecks we hit, but Key Dives has been running these waters for years and knows how to read conditions. The boat fills up fast – guest capacity is limited to ensure everyone gets the personal attention they deserve from the dive masters. If you've been thinking about stepping up your wreck diving game or want to experience some of the most famous artificial reefs in the world, this is your chance to do it all in one day.
