The Florida Keys offer some of the most spectacular diving in North America, and there's no better place to earn your Advanced Open Water certification than right here with Key Dives. This isn't your typical classroom-heavy course – we're talking about real adventure dives on world-class reefs where you'll build skills while exploring some seriously beautiful underwater territory. Over 2-3 days, you'll complete five adventure dives that'll take your diving from basic to polished, all while getting personalized instruction from our experienced dive professionals.
Here's the deal – this course is all about gaining experience while having a blast. You're not sitting in a classroom memorizing tables; you're out there on the reefs putting skills to work in real diving situations. The Advanced Open Water program requires two mandatory adventure dives: Deep Diving and Underwater Navigation. These aren't just boxes to check – the deep dive gets you comfortable at depths up to 100 feet, while navigation turns you into the kind of diver who can actually find their way back to the boat. After that, you pick three more adventure dives based on what's calling to you and what conditions allow. Popular picks include Peak Performance Buoyancy (seriously, good buoyancy makes everything better), Fish ID for the nature lovers, Wreck Diving if you want to explore some of the Keys' famous shipwrecks, Night Diving for a completely different underwater world, and Drift Diving where you cruise along with the current like an underwater superhero.
The whole package runs $530 and covers everything you need – eLearning modules, instruction, and three dive trips that get you those five adventure dives. You'll handle the book work online at your own pace, which means more time underwater when you get here. Our instructors know these reefs like the back of their hand, so you're getting local knowledge that turns good dives into great ones. The boat trips take you to different sites depending on conditions and what adventure dives you're working on. For the deep dive, we might hit a dramatic sloping ledge on the outer reef, while wreck diving could mean exploring one of the area's artificial reefs or historic shipwrecks. Each dive builds on the last, so by the time you're done, you'll notice a real difference in your comfort level and skills underwater. We keep groups small so you get personalized attention and can progress at your pace.
The Florida Keys sit right on the only living coral reef system in the continental US, which means the marine life here is off the charts. During your adventure dives, you might encounter goliath grouper – these gentle giants can weigh over 800 pounds and hang out around wrecks and deeper reef structures. They're curious about divers and often approach for a closer look, making for some pretty amazing photo opportunities. The best times to spot them is summer through fall when they gather at spawning sites. Another customer favorite are the massive green moray eels lurking in coral crevices and wreck openings. Nurse sharks cruise the sandy areas and often rest under ledges during the day. The reef fish diversity is incredible too – queen angelfish with their electric blue and yellow coloring, massive schools of yellowtail snapper that create living clouds of silver, and if you're lucky during the right season, you might encounter some larger pelagic species passing through the deeper waters off the reef. Night dives reveal a totally different cast of characters including octopus, lobsters, and bioluminescent plankton that light up when you move your hand through the water.
If you're ready to move beyond basic Open Water diving and really start exploring what the underwater world has to offer, this Advanced Open Water course in the Florida Keys is your ticket. You're not just getting a certification card – you're building real skills on some of the best reefs in the world with instructors who know how to make learning fun and effective. The small class size means you get personal attention and the variety of adventure dives means you'll discover what types of diving really get you excited. Plus, earning your Advanced cert opens doors to more dive sites and deeper adventures wherever you travel. The 72-hour cancellation policy gives you flexibility, and at $530 for all instruction and dives, it's a solid value for the quality of instruction and dive sites you'll experience. Just remember you need to be at least 15 years old (or 12 for the junior certification) with an Open Water certification already in your pocket, plus you'll need to clear the medical questionnaire before we get you in the water. Ready to take your diving to the next level? The reefs are waiting.
